Who Gave Me Mono?

Seriously. Contrary to popular belief due to my utter disregard for my blogging obligations, I have not died. But I came close for a couple days.

It all started with my first race here in California. A couple weeks ago, Sunday morning, I woke up without any intention of racing my bike, but somehow it still happened. The weather was actually nice (not raining) for the first time in a week, my race wasn't till 2:00pm, and Bekah (fellow Grumpy's gal) had already let me know she was going to be there. So I decided to head to Napa for the Cherry Pie Crit.

I met up with Bekah as we were driving in, and then we warmed up, while I got more and more intimidated as we saw the droves of intense, fast-looking women flocking around. And then the whole Colavita pro women's team showed up. So we'll just say that the race was great training for me, and leave it at that.

The day after the race, I came down with an awful chill, fever, body/neck ache. It came on so quickly and severly that my parents (both in the medical field) were afraid that I was going to die of meningitis when I told them my symptoms over the phone. So I reluctantly had my roommie drive me to the nearest Oakland ER where we spent the next 6 hours trying to get someone to care for me. After some IV fluids, tylenol, and blood tests, a doctor casually passed by, pointed at me, and said, "mono." A few hours later, we managed to get out of there, and I suffered in the comfort of my own bed (craigslist special!) for the next 5 days.

I hear the incubation period on mono, "the kissing disease", is 4 to 6 weeks, which means I picked it up somewhere in Minnesota. As far as I know, there's no one I was making out with in Minnesota in the weeks before I left. Is there something I'm missing here??

Anyway, supposedly mono can leave you out of commission for a LONG time, but I got lucky. I was good and sick for a few days, but after about a week, things improved drastically and I began to feel like a normal person. By now, I'm going to say I'm pretty much back to normal, although I feel like I missed a lot of bike ridin' time. This past weekend, I tried to make that up with this ride on Saturday, and this ride on Sunday. Did I mention that it was about 70 and sunny? Wow. I'm getting spoiled already. Counting my distance to and from the bars and BART in the evening, I topped 100 miles on Saturday.

If all goes well, I'll begin updating a bit more frequently, but the sweet climbs and curvy descents just outside my apartment are a bit distracting. Maybe you should come visit the Bay Area and see for yourself. I'm just sayin'.

And I'm out.

It was Tim S. I saw you kissing him in my back yard about 6 weeks ago.

mono? Do people outside of high school get mono?

And I totally did not know you were at Cherry Pie. I got my ass seriously handed to me there, and I don't have a high school kissing disease to blame for that. But still I wish I knew you were there.

Enjoy the riding and hope to see you at the next one!
