On the Road

Phenomenally, I actually managed to begin my move today.
I gave myself a goal departure time of 10:30am, and an actual estimated departure of 12:00 noon, and I set off right at 11:30am. Not bad!

The Echo was packed to the gills, and I put two of the bikes on top. I shipped a couple others. The drive through Minnesota was seriously sketchy, due to some unusually aggressive winds. I got tossed around so much that I thought I had a flat tire a couple times.

I was torn between drafting off semis to save a lot of gas and trying to go it alone at the Echo max pace of about 65mph. I also realized that I miss the manual transmission of the Civic. The automatic Echo feels free to switch gears whenever IT wants to! Of course, I have some input, but I miss the connectedness of manually shifting every time. Imagine riding a bike that shifted itself! (I have - it's interesting, but not something I'd want to do again.)

I was also astounded by the ubiquitous Kum & Gos. What a horrid name for a convenience store/gas station. But on the other hand...I guess I'm blogging about it, so they must be doing something right.

Tomorrow = Colorado.

Have a safe trip! Wash the bikes on top of the car as soon as you can - mine were coated in salt and rusting by the time I got around to cleaning them. Automatics suck.

Ahhh, yes. The lovely Kum n' Gos. Nobody believed me when I told them about these after a trip to CO. I had to show them KnG's website before they could comprehend there was such a place with such a name. Yes, KnG has a website. Hope the rest of the trip went well!
