Kingsley Mom

I didn't really feel like doing a race report from the State CX race quite yet, so I'm taking a page out of Smithers book and doing an interview -- with Sue Ellen, my very own mother.

Me: Hey, mom, do you want to say something on my blog?

Sue Ellen: Say something about how cyclocross races are so much fun because they tolerate all types of people and they are so friendly.

Me: Why'd you decide to have me?
Sue Ellen: I was actually looking for the messiah, someone who would save the world, and I wanted to be a saint myself.

Me: Oh. Well, um, what got you into biking?

Sue Ellen: I've been into it all my life, but you got me into racing. Although I can remember having to bribe you to go biking with me.

Me: What did you bribe me with?

Sue Ellen: Let's see, was it, ice cream? Cookies? I probably told you I'd take you to the mall or something.

Me: How did you first get me on a bike?
Sue Ellen: I bought a bike for you when you were 10, it was red.

Me: What? I could bike before I was 10!
Sue Ellen: Oh, you mean when you learned? You had a pink banana seat bike, and I put you on the top of a little hill so you could ride down it, and you fell off at the bottom, and got skinned, and hollered and screamed and acted like you were mortally wounded. So I told you to come into the house and stop but you wouldn't. You went back to the top of the hill and did it again. And you fell again. And you HOWLED, and you kept doing it, and I finally had to go in the house and let you keep doing it because it was too awful. You just kept doing it and hurting yourself and you wouldn't stop. Pretty soon you were riding.

Me: Yeah, that sucked. What about the red bike?
Sue Ellen: And then the red bike, when you were 10, was for your birthday. We lived on a road that was a STEEP hill going past our driveway, and the first day you had your red bike, we were out together, and you were going screamin' down the hill way too fast, and I was yelling at you that you had to brake before turning in the driveway. But you didn't hear me, and you tried to take the driveway going way too fast, and you crashed, and the paint job was scratched up, and the bar grips were all broken.

Me: Hmm, yes. Was I broken?

Sue Ellen: Nope, nope, you made a lot of noise, but you were all right. You loved that bike. Soon after that, a year or two after, you got a horse, and biking came after the horse. For quite a few years.

Me: Oh yeah, I remember that. When did things change?

Sue Ellen: Well you started racing bikes when you lived in Mexico. I think you met a bunch of really cool handsome Mexican guys that put you in bike clothes and clipless shoes.

Me: Right, I think I remember putting you in clipless shoes too.
Sue Ellen: Yes, that's true. First and last time. You arranged to have us stopping in front of crowds of people as frequently as possible so that I would fall in front of everybody. I must have fallen 8 or 9 times that day, but tried to keep smiling throughout.

Me: Yeah, I remember that. Have you ever thought twice about encouraging this biking hobby of mine?
Sue Ellen: Only when it came to the expense, AND I have gotten so that I'm always really glad when YOU [and not someone else] call me from the emergency room, so that I know that you are conscious and that you haven't had a head injury.

Me: You seem to handle the injuries pretty well.

Sue Ellen: What! Well, they're not mine! They're yours!

Me: Anything else you'd like to add?
Sue Ellen: About what?

Me: About your visit, biking, sainthood....?
Sue Ellen: I think that's probably enough. I might add, though, that there IS a life other than biking. There are other things in this world.

Me: Like what?
Sue Ellen: Sudoku.

And that's that. I'll get a race report up sooner or later.

Loved the interview! Looks like you were addicted to the downhills at a young age! I've been doing interviews with cyclists on my blog - asking questions like "Why do you ride?" and "What do you like most about riding?". It's been cool to hear the responses.

for the record karla has not commited to any new team, yet.

(no matter what SR says)...

and it is completely her decision to make.

as long as she chooses LGR.

...or else.

Wow. I thought Stacia had the coolest mom - but Sue Ellen might give her a run for her money!
