Marty RR, More Downers Pics, and Picnics

These are some of the sweet gas station finds that Shana and I picked up on the way to Downer's Grove last weekend.

This weekend, Shana and I headed to the Marty Road Race. Sarah, Paula, and new Bella Jennifer were racing in the cat 4 race earlier, in the morning wave, but the women's 1/2/3 wasn't till the afternoon. Ms. Jen had a fabulous first race, and we will all be psyched to have her out racing a ton more next season! The women's 1/2/3 race had a total of 5 women in it - Shana and I, Anne, Linda, and an AUC woman. We did 4 laps of a 12 mile loop, which had one pretty decent hill on it. Going into the race I was pretty sure I was going to get dropped when someone gunned it on the hill, but fortunately I was wrong. We pretty much rode a nice paceline for the entire race except for the hill. The first 3 times up the hill weren't too bad, but on the final lap Anne and Shana both attacked pretty hard. But I just picked it up and rode at a steady pace and stayed with them. At the top of the hill, we were all together, and that was pretty much my goal for the race. So I was psyched. We played cat and mouse for a bit going into the finish, until Shana attacked really hard. I tried to go with her, but she had quite a jump on us and I couldn't quite get on her wheel. I had a little gap on the other three, but they soon caught me, and then we all caught Shana. Going into the final stretch I showed my true non-sprinting colors and got 4th place. But overall I was super-happy with how the race went.

Bob Williams says something like this: In cycling, it doesn't really matter how fast or strong you are, but you gotta look good. Why? Because if you look really good and do bad in a race, people just think you're having a bad day. Whereas if you do bad in a race when you're not looking good... well...you get it. So here we are looking good.

And having fun.

Thanks to Shana for the photos.

Also, yesterday, I was officially introduced to NASCAR. Thank you, Sarah. I picked my guy (Harvick?), based mostly on his sponsor (Reeses?) and then watched him not win. I may have been able to pick up on more details, but my attention was diverted for much of the race by our viewing companions. Such is life.

Today we had a Bella picnic with about 25 or so Bellas and Fellas out for a morning ride followed by a picnic in the park. How picturesque! Our ride got back before noon, so Jen, Bella A, and I decided to go do some hill repeats. What could be more fun? We even had a Super-Rookie sighting. There were many others worthy of mention riding with him, but my brain was low on oxygen at that point, so I couldn't tell you about it.

And I'm out.

I love the picture of you and Shana. I am friends with Shana and rode with her this past spring in California. She's a good egg and you two look like super-cool-tough-biker-girls in the first pic...as you probably most certianly are :) I found your blog through Smithers..

Ride on,
Rebecca

Rebecca, thanks for reading, and yes, Shana is a good egg! We particularly enjoy purchasing sunglasses together.
super-rookie, I'm glad that you approve of my choice. I'm not sure exactly what 110% positive means - how can you be beyond sure? but I'll take it. See you at the track.
